Samson P. Odele is Principal Consultant in Inclusive Finance and Banking, and Country Manager – Country Programme Development, Uganda, for MicroSave. With 16 years of experience in the financial services sector, he is an expert on qualitative market research, product development/refinement, strategic marketing, pilot planning and roll-out, institutional assessments, process design and re-engineering, process reviews, and risk analysis. He has orchestrated growth of retail banks and microfinance institutions across Africa in Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Southern Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
Some examples of his recent work include:
  • CRS Expanding Financial Inclusion in Uganda, funded by the Master Card Foundation, through CRS Uganda: Leading the research and development of a long-term savings product for CRS’s Savings and Internal Lending Communities (SILCs) that can be delivered via a mobile money digital platform of MTN Uganda. (2015–ongoing)
  • Increasing Uptake and Usage of Mobile Money Services in Rural Uganda, funded by MTN Uganda:  Identified factors that would help MTN Uganda to increase uptake and usage of mobile money services in two selected rural areas. (2015)
  • Digitising Agro Value Chains Activities in Uganda, funded by UNCDF MM4P:  Conducted research to understand the key value chain actors in the coffee value chain, identified the activities and financial transactions, the enablers of, and barriers to, digitisation along the three value chains of coffee, dairy and fish. (2015)
  • Mobile Money Customer Journey Research, for UNCDF’s MM4P Uganda Project, funded by UNCDF, SIDA, AusAID and the BMGF: Supervised the research that helped to establish and understand customer pain points along the DFS users’ journey in their adoption and usage of digital financial services as a channel for financial inclusion. (2014)
Prior to joining MicroSave, Samson was the Projects Manager for CMF (now Global Trust Bank Ltd) and managed the implementation of the then CMF’s Equinox MIS Platform. As a Branch Manager for Commercial Microfinance (CMF) Limited, Samson gained considerable experience in banking, SME and micro-credit delivery and channel development. While working as a Projects Head at CMF, he was instrumental in redesigning processes and procedures on introduction of the Equinox Banking software application. He also worked as Research Assistant with Export Policy Analysis Unit, Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MFEP). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from Makerere University and a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) at Kyambogo University, pending submission of the thesis.
